Sailor Moon R 74: Artemis blasts off

Sailor Moon R episode 74 review

Thanks to Chibi-Usa’s stupidity, the four Sailor Guardians besides Moon have been captured by Rubeus. In a scene that was undoubtedly cut from the DiC version, they are all on crosses being crucified. They’re all unconscious, but I’m sure the censors wouldn’t let that get by. In any case, Artemis, Luna, Usagi, Mamoru, and Chibi-Usa have to find a way to free them.

So, Usagi just goes off and does her own thing, and then Chibi-Usa follows suit. Both of them get captured, predictably, and now it’s up to Mamoru and the cats to save them. Artemis and Luna hatch a half-baked idea that they’re going to pretend to be “the rabbit,” but when that idea is shelved, it’s Sailor Moon vs. Rubeus. Sailor Moon gets some attacks in, so soon Rubeus lights the place on fire. The Enterprise is burning in space, but at least the Sailor Guardians have been freed. And now, Sailor Mercury says it’s a “longshot” that they could teleport away. Yo, Mercury? That’s your only chance of survival at this point. A “longshot” would be if it actually had a small chance of working. You’re not so smart as you think, Mercury.

Anyway, everyone teleports away, Rubeus is left to burn, and everything’s happy again. Except me. This was a rather lousy pair of episodes that only made it by thanks to some unintentionally hilarious moments by Chibi-Usa. Can’t wait until she finds out her true identity.

Sailor Moon R 73: UFO invasion!

Sailor Moon R episode 73 review

Chibi-Usa throws a temper tantrum, then steals Usagi’s brooch and attempts to go “back to the future” – her words, not mine. She also wants some of those Sailor Failures to stay away, but instead they try to protect her, with disastrous results. All four Sailor Failures get sucked up into a UFO spaceship. I am not making this up.

After the Sailor Failures are gone, Usagi gets mad at Chibi-Usa and tries to slap her. Tuxedo Mask forbids this, so we’re likely to get a sob story from Chibi-Usa in the next episode where Usagi has to apologize to Chibi-Usa. Which isn’t fair, because Chibi-Usa deserved a worse fate than what she got. I mean, she ran out in front of cars on a roadway, and jumped from a two-story apartment. These ridiculous moments made me laugh – unintentionally – but they ought to earn her more than just a slap. Instead, we’re probably going to have to hear about how Usagi hasn’t been nice to Chibi-Usa, and blah, blah, blah.

Sailor Moon R 72: Sister, Sister

Sailor Moon R episode 72 review

I forgot to review this one after I saw it, so I’ll keep it brief: the other two sisters of Koan and the girl with the name I can’t spell go after their former sisters, only to realize that Rubeus has pulled one over on them, and that they need the power of love and friendship to defeat him. The Sailor Failures all gather around Sailor Moon and come up with a 5-way attack that defeats the enemy, and all is well… for now.

Not entirely the most memorable of episodes, nor not one that I particularly cared for.

Sailor Moon R 71: Four-move checkmate

Sailor Moon R episode 71 review

I am not sure how to spell the name of the villain of this episode, who also turns to the good side by the end of it. Bercheir or Bercheu or something like that. Anyway, she attacks Ami as Ami is playing in a chess tournament, a tournament Ami is winning as quickly as if she pulled out Scholar’s Mate on every opponent. Ami defeats her, too, but then Bercheir (?) gets mad and freezes the Sailor Failures™, and then Ami’s legs.

Eventually, thanks to Tuxedo Mask, they get freed, and then they defeat her. Bercheir then gets turned into a human like her sister, Koan, the star of the last episode. I suppose we’re going to have four identical episodes like this, with presumably Makoto and Minako also getting starring roles. Hey, it makes picking my Sailor Guardian of the episode that much easier. It’s just a little repetitive.
