2018 Anime Bracket – Elite Eight

Anime Bracket Elite Eight

How are the regional finals of the 2018 Anime Bracket going to go down? Read on to find out!

EVA Region

#1 Rei Ayanami (Evangelion) vs. #6 Leafa (Sword Art Online)

I had thought about picking Leafa, until someone put up a picture of Rei in a bunny suit for Easter Sunday. No, it wasn’t the type of bunny suit Haruhi Suzumiya wears. It was a full-fledged furry suit, with Rei’s cute little face peeking out, looking all embarrassed. And yes, it’s officially licensed art. For that, Rei advances to the Final Four. (I’ve tried to tell you over the years, it’s all subject to my whims!)

Winner: Rei

#1 Haruhi Suzumiya (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) vs. #3 Kurapika (Hunter x Hunter)

When the creator of Haruhi Suzumiya set out to make his series, did he expect Haruhi to become such an icon? A character who represents more than just her anime, but the very existence of anime itself? Think about it. She’s larger than life, so to speak. And while I originally planned to pick Kurapika to win the whole tournament, he got stymied by his lack of focus in his own movie. Granted, Haruhi Suzumiya also got shafted in her own movie too, but that was the point of it. Sorry, Kurapika, maybe next year. We’ll have another female champion.

Winner: Haruhi

#5 Haruka Tenoh (Sailor Moon) vs. #10 Sena Kobayakawa (Eyeshield 21)

Sena is the Cinderella of this year’s tournament. Then again, he is up against a character in Sailor Uranus who also has never reached a Final Four. Sena’s overcome a lot, and that’s why I like him so much as a character. Ultimately, it’s Sailor Uranus’ unique sexiness that wins this matchup. Sure, I know which way she swings, but does it matter? I find her to be the sexiest of the Sailor Senshi. And that’s all that matters in knocking out the final remaining male character.

Winner: Haruka

#3 Rem (Re:Zero) vs. #8 Tomo Takino (Azumanga Daioh)

Speaking of Cinderellas, we’ve got another one still in her glass slippers in Tomo. Tomo rewrote the book on how to be a funny character in a funny anime. Konata Izumi sadly ended up with a hard first-round matchup and couldn’t make any noise this year in the tournament, but Tomo has stepped up to the plate in her absence. But ultimately Rem is the character who has come to represent her anime and become one of the leading ladies in all of anime. She goes back to the Final Four.

Winner: Rem

And there you have it, this year’s Final Four are Rei, Haruhi, Haruka, and Rem! It’ll be Rei vs. Rem and Haruhi vs. Haruka. A bit of a tongue twister! Join me for the Final Four tomorrow!
