Toonami 2018 April Fools

Toonami

So, what went on last night at Toonami? What was it that you heard (and saw) on Adult Swim? Here’s a recap:

  • The Toonami block started as normal, playing Dragon Ball Super (to my new dance that I invented for the Dragon Ball Super theme song), Dragon Ball Z Kai, and Black Clover.
  • Toonami then advertised Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure as usual.
  • At midnight, the usual Toonami warning for mature content came on, but it was all in Japanese, as was the Adult Swim logo.
  • Tom (the Toonami host) spoke in Japanese, as did Sara, with English subtitles.
  • Toonami then showed the Japanese-spoken, English-subtitled first episode of FLCL: Alternative. (Note: this is Season THREE of FLCL. The second season, FLCL: Progressive, was not shown.)
  • At the end of the episode, the English credits were shown, including showing what English dub voice actresses will play whom.
  • Toonami then advertised a movie called “Mind Game,” then proceeded to play it.
  • Mind Game is so bizarre it makes me want to come up with a new word in the English language to describe it. It didn’t help that it, too, was subtitled, but the closest thing I’ve ever seen to it was a film called “The Grandmother” by David Lynch from the year 1970. Look it up if you haven’t seen it; it’s well worth the watch.
  • Mind Game took up 2 hours on the block. It was in Japanese, with English subtitles.
  • Then came Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Stardust Crusaders… the new episode. But in Japanese! (With English subtitles, of course.)
  • Toonami then proceeded to play all the scheduled episodes, Gundam: IBO, Hunter x Hunter, Naruto, Space Dandy, Cowboy Bebop, and Ghost in the Shell – all in Japanese, with English subtitles.
  • Toonami ended after 6:00 am instead of its usual “closing time.”

There you have it, a succinct description of Toonami and Adult Swim’s “April Fools” present to us. Man, do I wish every April Fools’ Day landed on a Sunday! In any case, it has not yet been determined whether I will be reviewing Jojo and Hunter x Hunter this week, or if we will be having our scheduled podcast. Black Clover will be reviewed as scheduled.

Adult Swim has also said that all the episodes will be aired in English next week. So perhaps I will wait a week on Jojo and Hunter x Hunter. In the meantime, happy April Fools’ Day, and happy Easter too!
