2018 Anime Bracket: Sweet Sixteen

Sweet Sixteen

A little late on this round this year, as the Final Four of the NCAA tournament is taking place. In any case, let’s get to the Sweet Sixteen!

EVA Region

#1 Rei Ayanami (Evangelion) vs. #5 Satsuki Kiryuin (Kill la Kill)

Between these two former champions, it’s hard to find a way to determine how either can lose. This time around, I just have to go with the one who has the cuter alternative forms, meaning Rei Ayanami as a bride, as a nurse, and as a fast food worker. Satsuki? She’s a fantastic character, but can she serve me a hamburger and fried potatoes with an iced tea? Rei can (although she’s a bit clumsy at it!)

Winner: Rei

#6 Leafa (Sword Art Online) vs. #10 Victor Nikiforov (Yuri on Ice)

Victor may be the favorite when on the ice, but he’s been an underdog all throughout this tournament. This time, he ends up facing the one character from Sword Art Online who never aggravates me and never annoys me. She’s an incredibly fun character who provides the series with someone who isn’t overly serious. She advances to the Elite Eight over the Cinderella from Yuri on Ice.

Winner: Leafa

#1 Haruhi Suzumiya (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) vs. #5 Rin Tohsaka (Fate/stay night)

As much as I’d love Tohsaka to go farther into this tournament, I have to go with the character who I’ve loved for so long, and who still adorns my wall nearly ten years running now. Haruhi advances to yet another Elite Eight.

Winner: Haruhi

#3 Kurapika (Hunter x Hunter) vs. #10 Hinako (Sister Princess)

It’s been a perfect Cinderella story for Hinako, making it all the way here to the third round. But Kurapika and his Scarlet Eyes put an end to her run, as he hopes to make it back to the championship match. His road isn’t going to be nearly as easy as it was last year, but he wins this particular match quite easily.

Winner: Kurapika

#5 Haruka Tenoh (Sailor Moon) vs. #9 Ryo Hayakawa (Princess Nine)

Another great story in Ryo comes to an end as she goes up against the strongest and sexiest of the Sailor Senshi. It’s hard to pick against Haruka already, but the fact that she’s in the more recently-released Sailor Moon series makes her even harder to beat.

Winner: Haruka

#6 Meiling Li (Cardcaptor Sakura) vs. #10 Sena Kobayakawa (Eyeshield 21)

You know, I love Meiling, but I’ve been following Sena’s story for a while now, and he’s really caught on with me. Eyeshield 21 is a journey, and Sena’s particular journey has been something else. As a result, I’m picking him to go on to the Elite Eight and challenge for an unthinkable Final Four spot.

Winner: Sena

#5 Ryuko Matoi (Kill la Kill) vs. #8 Tomo Takino (Azumanga Daioh)

As fun as Ryuko is in her series, I just can’t get over what a hilarious character Tomo is. She has a lot of help, but she is the biggest reason why Azumanga Daioh was such a success. I’m taking Tomo with me to the Elite Eight.

Winner: Tomo

#3 Rem (Re:Zero) vs. #7 Aisha Clan-Clan (Outlaw Star)

All good runs must come to an end sometime, and this one ends for Aisha, who just doesn’t have the staying power to beat an icon like Rem. Now, the question for Rem is, can she make it to back-to-back Final Fours?

Winner: Rem

The Elite Eight will take place tomorrow!
