2018 Anime Bracket – INUYASHA Region, 1st Round

Anime Bracket First & Second Rounds

I’m desperately trying to catch up after all the lost time that has caused the Anime Bracket to fall way behind schedule. Here’s the conclusion of the first round.

#1 Sango (InuYasha) vs. #16 Ryuk (Death Note)

Yeah, no way I’m going against Sango here. She remains in a special spot in my heart, even though InuYasha is celebrating the 10th year of its manga conclusion this year.

Winner: Sango

#8 Tomo Takino (Azumanga Daioh) vs. #9 Siesta (The Familiar of Zero)

Now this is a tough one to call. Tomo became my favorite character in Azumanga Daioh because of her spirit, her energy, and her merciless picking on Yomi. As for Siesta, I’ve always thought she would make a better pair with Saito than his choice Louise. Ultimately, Siesta loses this one thanks to the fact that her character is acting out of character in the final season of The Familiar of Zero. As a result, I have to give it to Tomo.

Winner: Tomo

#5 Ryuko Matoi (Kill la Kill) vs. #12 Kamina (Gurren Lagann)

Ryuko remains the only character to reach multiple finals yet not win the championship. She is severely underseeded here with only a #5. Kamina doesn’t put up much of a challenge to her, and she advances easily.

Winner: Ryuko

#4 Yoruichi Shihouin (Bleach) vs. #13 Jet Black (Cowboy Bebop)

It’s an upset but really not much of one. Jet is one of those characters who’s just really cool. Yoruichi hasn’t had a chance to shine in a very long time. I have to go with Jet here just because Cowboy Bebop still holds up well today.

Winner: Jet

#6 Izumi Himuro (Princess Nine) vs. #11 Nico Robin (One Piece)

Himuro wins here not just because I loved Princess Nine, but also because she was a fantastic villain throughout the series, all the way up until the point where she became pretty much the victim. Her journey throughout the series was one of those great character arcs that is reserved for only the best.

Winner: Himuro

#3 Rem (Re:Zero) vs. #14 Saitama (One-Punch Man)

Yeah, there’s no way I’m going against Rem in round one. Saitama brings a lot to the table, but he can’t punch his way past Rem, who is one of the faces of the to-be-released Re:Zero series.

Winner: Rem

#7 Aisha Clan-Clan (Outlaw Star) vs. #10 Allison Whittington (Allison & Lillia)

I never got around to finishing Allison & Lillia thanks to a malfunctioning DVD player; I’ll have to do that in the future. In the meantime, Aisha was my favorite character in Outlaw Star because she was always angry at someone and also always saying how great the Ctarl-Ctarl were. As a result, I’m passing her by with an easy victory here.

Winner: Aisha

#2 Homura Akemi (Madoka Magica) vs. #15 Fuu (Samurai Champloo)

I think I see a Homura meme every single day. Fuu can’t claim the same.

Winner: Homura

That’s all for round one, see you tomorrow for round two!

Jojo SC 30: Emergency Slop

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders episode 30 review

Jojo SC 30

Jojo starts off this week with… yes, you guessed it, more poop jokes. At this point I’m just expecting them, so I’m not going to complain about them at this point. I will say that the bathrooms I went to in rural Mexico were much better than these ones. Heck, they even had Wi-Fi!

Joseph gets magnetized by a Stand, causing everything metal to stick to him. At first it sounds like a pretty cool thing to have, but he’s not Magneto. Instead, he’s having any and every metal object flying at him. He’s so desperate he rushes to an escalator. Escalators, of course, are made of metal.

So Joseph finds himself crashing down the escalator, and his only hope is for Hermit Purple to hit the “Emergency Stop” button before he hits the bottom. (There is no “Reverse” button on this particular escalator.) Joseph starts screaming and crying as he hits the bottom. One problem: Avdol already pressed the “Emergency Stop” button. This leads to a fantastic, hilarious scene where Joseph is crying like a baby thinking that he’s dead as he sits at the bottom of a stopped escalator.

(True story: as I watched this episode, my mouth was full of gauze thanks to the oral surgery. It was so funny that I almost vomited all the gauze all over the place. This was perhaps even funnier than the Oingo Boingo moment a few weeks ago.)

More funny moments occur as Joseph gathers himself and pretends he’s an escalator inspector. Then Joseph and Avdol follow who they thought was the Stand user into the women’s bathroom. You can guess how that ends up.

After all that, Joseph and Avdol are both magnetized and sticking to each other when they’re trying to chase down the Stand user. That’s where we leave off, after a hilarious episode even if you don’t like poop jokes. Once again, Jojo proves it’s the “King of Comedy” on Saturday nights.

Character of the episode: Joseph

Episode rating (out of four stars): ***1/2
