His and Her Circumstances episodes 1-2 review
So, time for a blast from the past. His and Her Circumstances, also known as Kare Kano, is a Gainax anime, so everywhere you go, you see Gainax’s fingerprints all over. This feels like Evangelion if Evangelion was in a normal universe.
The plotline is simple: Yukino Miyazawa appears to be the perfect student, but in reality she’s a slob. She puts on a good face in public to get attention. That’s until Soichiro Arima becomes her rival. He steals all the attention away from her. So Yukino spends all her time in order to “beat” him, which she does, only to have him congratulate her. Something about heaping burning coals here.
Then, Arima catches Yukino in a moment of weakness. Yukino is more concerned about hiding her slob lifestyle from everyone than anything else, so she agrees to be blackmailed by Arima. Arima starts to come off as a nasty guy, but in reality he had no intention of letting anyone know about Yukino’s secret.
That’s where the first two episodes end; you’ll have to wait until next week to find out where it goes from here. For now, it’s off to a rip-roaring start.
