E21 55-56: Sumo Brother

Eyeshield 21 episodes 55-56 review

E21 56

In episode 55, we have the classic “runaway” episode, where Komosubi (also known as Fatty Jr.) runs away from home and the team because he feels offended and blah, blah, blah. How many times have I seen this in fiction? It happens so often, that a character feels sorry for themselves and runs away. It’s overly predictable, and while it isn’t a bad episode per se, it’s just been done so many times.

As for the next episode, it’s a sumo wrestling contest which Komosubi wins by outmaneuvering an enormous opponent. It’s a bizarre episode, but ultimately pretty funny. Neither of these episodes had anything to do with football, though. So we aren’t any closer to the Christmas Bowl than we were last week.

Jojo SC 9: Play That Funky Music

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders episode 9 review

Jojo SC 9

What could have been a cool twist in the story ends up being a lame trope that’s been seen in a million different pieces of fiction already. Kakyoin isn’t really bad; it’s just an impostor who’s bad. So Jotaro goes and fights off the fake Kakyoin, then the real Kakyoin shows up and everything’s back to normal.

What I wanted was Kakyoin to actually be evil and a threat to the Jojo gang. Instead, all we get is another battle, one that is easily won, and not much else. And let’s face it, if we lost Kakyoin, would we really be losing all that much? Kakyoin, Polnaroff, Avdol – all three of these guys are superfluous. They add nothing to the show and barely have personalities of their own. Having 5 main characters is ridiculous, given that they basically all are the same character. Big muscular macho man with no feelings. That’s it.

Yes, Jojo has been good, but not this week, and it’s trending down.
