Happy Independence Day everyone! Let’s see what we’ve got here…
Day 4: Most Overrated Anime
It’s tough to pick just one. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann comes to mind, after being hailed as the next Evangelion, and instead ending up as an above-average but not great series. Durarara!! too, because it was supposed to be good, and it flat-out wasn’t. But the two I’m going to pick on today are the following…
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood & Attack on Titan.
FMA: Brotherhood was far inferior to the original Fullmetal Alchemist, and no one believes me on this. If you’re basing it on the final episode of each, then yes, I get your point. But if you focus in on Ed Elric and how self-righteous he acts in Brotherhood as opposed to the original, where he realizes he’s just as bad as everybody else, there’s really no comparison. The plot takes some stupid twists, and overall it’s just a mess.
But if you’re looking for something that I haven’t bleached from my mind, Attack on Titan is the choice here. Mikasa yelling “Eren!” every two minutes, Eren going berserk despite being sort of useless, and Levi being pretty much the AoT version of self-righteous Ed Elric. The second season began pretty well, then fell off a cliff once the Reiner and Bertholdt twist was revealed in such a lame way. I can understand the popularity of it, but I can’t justify why it’s rated so high, when it’s no better than a Bleach or One Piece.
So if you want one answer, it’s Attack on Titan, but FMA: Brotherhood is right there with it.
