Revolutionary Girl Utena episodes 15-16 review
Episode 15 was the same old cookie-cutter stuff we’ve had over the first 14 episodes, so I won’t talk much about it and call it mediocre. As for Episode 16, it was hilarious beyond belief. Maybe the funniest episode I’ve seen of anime ever. It was just like the “runaway kangaroo” from earlier in the series.
Nanami gets given a gift from someone, and it’s part of the Sebastian Dior collection, so it must be really good. Actually, it turns out to be… a cowbell. But she starts wearing it every day to school, a giant cowbell around her neck. Only Utena is brave enough to stand up to her and tell her that it looks weird. Nanami defends it in an argument with her, then starts talking like a cow. And eating like a cow. And behaving like a cow. Soon enough, she’s an all-out cow, eating grass in the field, mooing, and charging like a bull at a red sweater that Anthy made.
I have a fever, and the only prescription is more Utena funny episodes. When Utena tries to be serious, it comes up short, but when it tries to be funny, it beats anything a comedy series could offer. Runaway kangaroo? Octopus in the closet? Nanami the cow? This is over-the-top funny. I only wish Utena was this good when it gets down to its serious business. Maybe Nanami is the true rescuer of this series from mediocrity. *cue Nanami laugh*
