E21 22-23: This is how you introduce new characters

Eyeshield 21 episodes 22-23 review

E21 22

Eyeshield 21 puts on a football clinic every episode, and in these two episodes it put on a clinic on how to introduce new characters to a show. While Tokyo Ghoul insists on the “throwing stuff at the wall and seeing if it sticks” method, Eyeshield 21 takes its time, spending entire episodes on introducing first Suzuna and then Panther. And by the end of each episode, I fell in love with Suzuna and enjoyed having Panther around.

See, there’s nothing wrong with a ton of characters. But when you try to introduce 10 characters in a matter of two episodes when you haven’t even developed the characters you already have, then your series (Tokyo Ghoul) sucks. On the other hand, Eyeshield 21 is very patient. I’ve been waiting anxiously on Suzuna’s first appearance, and Eyeshield 21 decided it wouldn’t add her until episode 22. That’s the way to do it; make sure your main characters are fully developed before you add one of prime importance.

And guess what? Eyeshield 21 is quickly becoming one of my favorite anime. So far it’s easily winning the race between the five shows I watch each week on DVD; now it’s going to have a shot at joining some of the best I’ve ever seen. I regret not buying Eyeshield 21 sooner; it’s definitely worth a watch, even (and maybe, especially) if you’re not a football fan.

Episode 22 rating (out of four stars): ***1/2
