E21 1-2: K-ON!

Eyeshield 21 episodes 1-2 review

Eyeshield 21

So the first anime on my list to watch during my 10-year anime anniversary is Eyeshield 21, a show about American football. You wouldn’t know it based off the first two episodes, though. The same way K-ON! spent most of its time outside the world of music, Eyeshield 21‘s first two episodes spend little time on sports.

That’s not a bad thing though. The slice of life factor isn’t always negative. To sum it up, Sena is your typical high school student, with a sort-of girlfriend named Mamori, who has no sports skills whatsoever, or so it seems. No sports skills? That would make him like me. But actually he is a really fast runner, and especially fast when he is scared. So he spends the first episode getting bullied, which again was like me. Then he shows off his super-fast speed in trying to escape, and as a result gets roped into joining the football club by a crazy guy named Hiruma.

In episode two, Sena has the job of roping in eight more members in order to play a game, just the same way in K-ON! the three members desperately need to find a fourth to keep the club alive. Sena is desperate to help his friend Kurita, who is a genuinely nice guy who just wants to play in the Christmas Bowl. Sena manages to get a few, but it’s Hiruma who gets the most players, and now they finally have enough to field a team.

Overall, very charming, though not anything too great. I would say the second episode was actually better than the first. Do I want to keep watching? Of course I do! And that’s all that matters at this point.

Episode 1 rating (out of four stars): **1/2

Episode 2 rating (out of four stars): ***
