2017 Anime Bracket – 1st Round, Part 2

First and Second Rounds

Let’s move on with more first round matchups, this time in the HARUHI Region and the BOYS Region!

#1 Haruhi Suzumiya (Haruhi Suzumiya) vs. #16 Meowth (Pokemon)
Haruhi: 2009 E8, 2010 Runner-Up, 2011 Runner-Up, 2012 R32, 2013 F4, 2014 S16, 2015 Champion, 2016 E8
Meowth: 2010 R64, 2011 R64, 2012 R64

Haruhi’s managed to win 6 matches, 5 matches, 4 matches, 3 matches, 2 matches, and 1 match in various years. Of course, she’s never lost a first-round match, and why would she? Especially not up against this opposition. Meowth tries hard, but Haruhi beats him easily.

Winner: Haruhi

#8 Mine (Akame ga Kill) vs. #9 Haruka Tenoh (Sailor Moon)
Mine: 2016 S16
Haruka: 2014 S16, 2015 S16, 2016 S16

Ever since I decided that I like Haruka (Sailor Uranus), she’s been amazing in this tournament. Mine got her first appearance last year, and she was really successful as well. This is one of those matchups I’m deciding on a complete whim. I think I had planned on taking Mine for weeks now, but I look up at my Sailor Uranus figure and say…

Winner: Haruka

#5 Hinata Hyuga (Naruto) vs. #12 Priscilla Barielle (Re:Zero)
Hinata: 2009 Runner-Up, 2010 R32, 2011 R64, 2012 R64, 2013 R64, 2014 R64, 2015 S16, 2016 R32
Priscilla: First year in tournament

Hinata was oh so close to winning it all the first year we held this thing. Sadly, she came up short, and has struggled ever since. She goes up against a red-hot Priscilla, who is not only hot in an attractive fashion but also hot off Re:Zero‘s great first season (hopefully there are more seasons to come!). Priscilla ends up pulling off an easy upset here.

Winner: Priscilla

#4 Yoruichi Shihouin (Bleach) vs. #13 Mio Akiyama (K-ON!)
Yoruichi: 2009 R64, 2010 F4, 2011 F4, 2012 R64, 2013 R32, 2014 S16, 2015 R64, 2016 E8
Mio: First year in tournament

Look out for these characters making their first appearance in the tournament! Mio is the very definition of “moe.” She’s one of the best characters of K-ON! Yoruichi has a lot of past history of success, as I’ve fallen in and out of love with her. Right now, I’m out of love with her, and thus Mio advances.

Winner: Mio

BOYS Region

#1 Kurapika (Hunter x Hunter) vs. #16 Abel Nightroad (Trinity Blood)
Kurapika: First year in tournament
Abel: 2015 R64, 2016 R64

Kurapika makes his first appearance in the tournament, and due to the addition of the BOYS Region, he gets to debut as a #1 seed. Will he find any trouble with Abel? Not one bit, actually. Kurapika will use his skills later; this match is quite a breeze.

Winner: Kurapika

#8 Tony Tony Chopper (One Piece) vs. #9 Kamina (Gurren Lagann)
Chopper: First year in tournament
Kamina: 2015 R32, 2016 R64

This one’s actually quite easy. Since it’s been a long time since I’ve seen Gurren Lagann, and since I’ve been watching One Piece every week, Chopper beats Kamina easily. Sorry, Kamina, you’re a great guy, but Chopper has grown on me over the past months. Sadly, this might be Chopper’s best chance, what with One Piece disappearing from Toonami in a couple weeks.

Winner: Chopper

#5 Kenpachi Zaraki (Bleach) vs. #12 Austria (Hetalia)
Kenpachi: 2009 S16, 2010 R32, 2011 E8, 2012 R64, 2013 R64, 2014 R64
Austria: 2011 S16, 2012 R32, 2013 R32, 2014 R64, 2015 R64

Hetalia is dead, people. No one cosplays it anymore, no one cares about it anymore. It’s sad. I was a huge Hetalia fan. Now Hetalia’s buried and rotting. Meanwhile, I was going back through Bleach under the prior blog. So I did get some Kenpachi screen time, and that’s going to be enough for him to defeat Austria.

Winner: Kenpachi

#4 Jet Black (Cowboy Bebop) vs. #13 Saitama (One-Punch Man)
Jet: 2009 R32, 2010 R32, 2011 R64, 2012 R64, 2013 R32, 2014 R64, 2015 R64, 2016 R64
Saitama: First year in tournament

Saitama almost didn’t make the tournament! I had forgotten all about One-Punch Man, and it got left off the “automatic bids” list. Fortunately, I remembered him in time for setting up the bracket. He goes up against Jet Black, one of the coolest characters of all time. You just want to be Jet Black. Since I nearly forgot about Saitama altogether, I can’t give him the win over Jet.

Winner: Jet

Stay tuned tomorrow for the second half of the first round of the Anime Bracket!
